Library Board
Founded in 1883 under a city bylaw enabled by the Free Public Libraries Act of 1882, the Guelph Public Library evolved from the Guelph Mechanic’s Institute (est. 1850). The Public Libraries Act outlines the size and composition of the Library Board, its relationship to City Council, and the principles guiding the delivery of public library service. In Ontario, library boards govern and manage public libraries to ensure responsive, efficient service that meets community needs.
The Guelph Public Library operates under the terms of the Public Libraries Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. P.44, opens a new window.
The Library Board has the sole authority and responsibility for establishing policy at the Guelph Public Library. The Library Board has delegated responsibility for operational policies to the Library CEO.
